The New Trump Accounts - Part 2
Although I'm a fan, it's worth acknowledging drawbacks, limitations and criticisms of the accounts
This is a continuation of a Part 1 post in which I praise the new Trump Accounts1 as kind of awesome, actually.
But also, it’s worth being clear-eyed about drawbacks, limitations, and criticisms of the accounts.
On the naming of these accounts after Trump
Let’s start here. This should have been called a USA Account. Or a 1776 Account. Or America is Awesome Account. Or anything universally patriotic, rather than provocatively MAGA-coded.
Half the country will learn about “Trump Accounts” and say “Hell Yeah!”
The other half the country will say “No Way!”
This is a mistake analogous to a Democratic Congress creating a “Slavery Reparations Account” or “Honoring Stonewall LGBTQ+ Equality Account” with the same exact features, and then expecting the other half the country to be excited to participate. It’s going to prevent participation and is needlessly provocative.
